Recommendations of the Ukrainian Association of Medical Physicists for the development of a master’s program (or academic part of residency) in medical physics

Dear colleagues!

We would like to present the approved "Recommendations of the Ukrainian Association of Medical Physicists for the development of a master's program (or academic part of residency) in medical physics"..

The IAEA’s Postgraduate Medical Physics Academic Program was based on these recommendations. Training Course Series 56. IAEA, Vienna, 2013, as well as experience in implementing the Master’s Program in Medical Physics, accredited by the International Organization of Medical Physics (IOMP), jointly conducted by the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and the University of Trieste.

These recommendations are the first part of the Medical Physics Expert project (followed by residency, licensing and continuing professional development) to increase the level of expertise and qualifications of medical physicists and, as a consequence, the authority of medical physicists in medicine.

An important part of training a qualified clinical medical physicist (expert in medical physics) is a master’s program. But, unfortunately, those training programs available in Ukraine do not correspond to what the medical physicist faces in practice, not to mention the minimum requirements of the European Union and the IAEA. In order to increase the level of these programs, as well as to assist higher education institutions, we, as a community of medical physicists of Ukraine, can offer these recommendations. They provide a basic list of courses (modules) for which a medical physicist must undergo training and acquire knowledge. The purpose of these recommendations was not to create a full curriculum and to restrict universities from choosing additional courses / modules. But at the same time, when universities do not include basic courses in their curricula, such a program for medical physicists is incomplete, with a loss of integrity.

We hope that the Higher Education Institutions of Ukraine, which provide / wish to train qualified medical physicists, will take into consideration the given Recommendations and will improve their educational programs in accordance with them.
